‘Robber’s Roost’ Day Trip

Wednesday, May 29, 2024

Our May day trip takes us to Snyder, Texas, otherwise known as ‘Robber’s Roost’ due to the sometimes nefarious nature of a few residents and a lack of law enforcement in its early days.

The day begins with a stop at the always favorite Slaton Bakery for coffee and one of their famous pastries or donuts, then continue our journey to Snyder. Our first stop will be at Scurry County Museum, located on the campus of Western Texas College. SCM shares the story of the county and its pioneers through various exhibits and artifacts. We will learn about the early ranches in the area along with the evolution of oil in the county. There is also a small gift shop with ornaments, bricks from the old Santa Fe Depot, books etc.

Next, we drive to Scurry County Heritage Village, which is similar to the National Ranching Heritage Center in Lubbock. We will take a step back in time visiting historical structures, the Engine No. 5 train, the Dermott baseball park, Fluvanna Barber Shop and more!

Before lunch we plan to visit Defaid Emporium, a general store founded in 2018 and features Texas-made products from around the state.

After lunch we will drive by a few historic sites in town (Scurry County Jail, Triangle Sinclair Station, etc.). The rest of the afternoon will be spent on your own shopping some of the downtown boutiques and stores.

The cost is $70 per person and includes lunch, all activities, and transportation.

We will meet at the east side parking lot of WalMart (4215 S. Loop 289) at 7:45am and depart at 8:00am.
